The Undergraduate STEM Education Badge is earned by taking at least four courses across education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. As a result of earning this micro-credential, the student will gain pedagogical content knowledge that is necessary to teach integrated STEM subjects in elementary or early childhood education settings in the 21st century.

Required Courses

• BI 101/101L Gen. Biology or CH 101/101L Environmental Chemistry or CH 104/104L Survey of Chemistry
• SC 110 Concepts in Science or SC 120 Light & Sound
• CS 200 Introduction to Computer Science or CS 256 Computer Science I
• ED 435 STEM Methods or ED 437 Science and the Young Child

Additional Requirements

• Minimum grade requirement is a C- for each course.
• The Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics I, II, and III courses (MTH 21x series) are required for non-Education Studies majors.
• Reflection paper. After completing all courses, the student will submit a 3-5 page reflection paper to explain the personal value of earning the STEM Education (undergraduate) micro-credential. The paper must include personal examples to exemplify how each course has contributed to the student’s abilities to effectively teach STEM content to students in the future.

Learning Outcomes/Competencies

• Develop a conceptual understanding of various science and mathematical concepts to strengthen the student’s abilities to teach STEM topics.
• Acquire knowledge of best practices for teaching STEM topics at the PreK-6 grade levels.
• Create and teach engaging STEM lessons for learners in early childhood and/or elementary grade levels.
