The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is a teacher preparation program that leads to an Oregon Preliminary teaching license. Candidates choose to do either the Multiple Subjects (Elementary, Special Education) endorsement or a Single Subject endorsement. The MAT program is offered in a two-year format starting each September. Students progress through the program in a cohort arrangement: they enter together, enroll in the same classes, and finish together as a community of learners. Upon successful completion, students receive the Master of Arts in Teaching degree in addition to the Oregon teaching license.
In order to qualify for the MAT program, candidates must show content area preparation. There are course prerequisites for each endorsement area. Candidates must also show evidence of successful experiences working with youth the age they plan to teach. Public school classroom experiences are preferred.
The application process takes place each winter with a priority application deadline in early January.

Degree Roadmap
The MAT program is offered in a two year format. The courses are completed as a cohort. The program is heavily field-based. Once the foundational courses are completed, students spend part of each day in their public school placement while also attending courses in the afternoons/evenings.
Capstone
Students in the MAT program complete half-day and full-day student teaching, planning the curriculum with their mentor teacher. Students also complete a Professional Teaching Portfolio.
