This interdisciplinary certificate gives non-fiction filmmakers the tools they need to tell stories that matter about our world’s most pressing challenges.
Inclement Weather 2-hour Delay 2/6/2025
To allow for crews to manage the campus conditions, SOU Ashland campus will operate on a two hour delay Thursday, February 6, 2025. The Hawk dining facility will operate on normal working hours, all other classes, events, and activities will resume at 10 am.

Certificate in Documentary Production
Offered as an Academic Certificate
The Certificate in Documentary Production is designed for students who are not pursuing a bachelor’s degree, as well as traditional students pursuing a bachelor’s or masters degree in other disciplines who have a passion for non-fiction media production specific to their disciplines or wish to be engaged in social issue documentary production. The certificate includes hands-on technical training in audio/visual production in both studio and field settings, as well as storytelling and post-production. Students also explore documentary methods, ethics, and conventions, as well as journalistic multimedia creation.
Documentary students must select a concentration from the following eight disciplines:
- Criminology & Criminal Justice
- Environmental Science & Policy
- Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies
- History
- Native American Studies
- Outdoor Adventure Leadership
- Political Science
- Sociology & Anthropology
Students with a portfolio that demonstrates technical proficiency and professional experience in target areas may apply to receive credit for prior learning, which may be used to substitute program prerequisites or lower-division course requirements.

Degree Roadmap
Every Documentary Production student will take courses in storytelling or multimedia writing, studio production, sound and lighting design, documentary theory, and documentary or broadcast news production.
Capstone
Our interdisciplinary concentrations offer something for students interested in many different types of documentary filmmaking, including activist docs (Criminology & Criminal Justice; Environmental Science & Policy; Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies; Political Science), informational docs (History; Sociology & Anthropology), and outdoor adventure films (Outdoor Adventure Leadership).
