Oct 13, 2026 – The October video message from SOU President Rick Bailey comes straight from the heart of campus 鈥 the walkway between Taylor Hall and the Stevenson Union. The first of two topics this month is all about taking part in democracy, regardless of your political affiliation or beliefs. President Bailey recently co-moderated the southern Oregon gubernatorial debate, and he urges all viewers to take civic responsibility and civic engagement seriously. 鈥淲e really think it鈥檚 important to be participants in our democracy, and that鈥檚 the message to all of you,鈥 he says. The 2026 midterm general election is on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the registration deadline in Oregon is Oct. 13. And while the 鈥淪upport SOU鈥 yard signs popping up all over the Rogue Valley are vital, the president says there are messages of a more political nature that are also important to consider and understand. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a time for you to make your voice heard, so we ask you to be a participant in our democracy,鈥 he says. The second topic from President Bailey鈥檚 October video is SOU鈥檚 fast-approaching homecoming weekend, Oct. 21 through Oct. 24, and the weekend鈥檚 importance to the university鈥檚 40,000 alumni. The president connects with alumni at Raider Rendezvous events at various cities in Oregon and around the country each year, and many SOU graduates return to campus each year for homecoming. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a reminder of all the great work they鈥檙e doing, all around the world,鈥 he says. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 also a reminder of why we鈥檙e here.鈥

Aug 3, 2026 – President Bailey heads back to the Digital Media Center for his August video message, which focuses mostly on the Vitality Plan for SOU鈥檚 transformation to a 鈥淟iving Laboratory鈥 operating system that unifies academic offerings, streamlines pathways and prioritizes essential human capacities. The president acknowledges all those who offered their thoughts and suggestions to the planning process and gives a quick progress report on how the plan will be implemented over the next several months. 鈥淚t鈥檚 all about how do we serve students, how do we serve them better and how do we preserve this university,鈥 he says. President Bailey also discusses a recent economic impact study that shows SOU generates a total of $730 million annually for Oregon鈥檚 economy 鈥 24 times more than the $30 million provided by the state for the university鈥檚 operation. 鈥淭hat alone should tell you the importance of our university,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he more students we serve and more students who make it to graduation stage, that鈥檚 not just good for those students, it鈥檚 good for the community.鈥

May 15, 2026 – President Bailey focuses on one topic in this month鈥檚 video message, and it鈥檚 an important one: how SOU has started from the recommendations of the Deloitte consulting firm and is now crafting a plan for the university鈥檚 transformation that leans more into institutional values and community connections. There is no disputing that the final plan 鈥 which will be presented to the SOU Board of Trustees June 18 鈥 must pare about $20 million from a budget of roughly $100 million. The process is one that focuses on potential tradeoffs and alternatives to some of the Deloitte recommendations 鈥渢o make it fit SOU,鈥 the president says. The university is seeking input and ideas from both campus and the community, but the timeframe for making modifications to the plan is narrow. 鈥淲e have our role to play in this,鈥 President Bailey says. 鈥淲e really have a couple weeks to put a plan together, and a year to implement it.鈥 And he emphasizes that the goal is a final product 鈥 and a transformed version of SOU 鈥 that can serve as a model for other colleges and universities in Oregon and around the country that are feeling similar financial headwinds. 鈥淲e can鈥檛 just become a smaller version of ourselves,鈥 he says.

January 20, 2026 – Enrollment and retention 鈥 that鈥檚 the mantra at SOU, and those are the topics of this month鈥檚 video message from 麻豆传媒女神 President Rick Bailey. The state of Oregon provides about $30 million per year in funding for SOU, and the university generates about $282 million annually in economic activity 鈥 $9 for every dollar invested by the state. The university keeps that engine humming 鈥 and maintains or increases the state鈥檚 investment 鈥 by increasing the number of students it serves, and by giving those students reasons to remain at SOU through graduation. President Bailey introduces the 鈥淪OU Raider Influencer Card,鈥 which has a QR code on the back that allows the holder of the card to waive the fee to apply at SOU. 鈥淚t鈥檚 all about customer service,鈥 he says. Then there鈥檚 the 鈥淟ollypop Moment鈥 鈥 lollypops with QR codes that enable students to give feedback via a Google Document for great interactions with faculty or staff members. 鈥淧roject Architect鈥 is the ongoing initiative that aims to bump up both enrollment and retention at SOU, through the mindful and daily efforts of all campus community members.

December 11, 2025 – Progress and momentum are the two themes for this month鈥檚 video message from 麻豆传媒女神 President Rick Bailey. He points out that 麻豆传媒女神 one of just three public universities in Oregon to have a gain in overall student headcount this fall, and that lines up with a new initiative that the university will soon launch. 鈥淧roject Architect鈥 will have two primary goals: to increase enrollment among first-year students, and to increase overall retention of students 鈥 to 鈥渉old onto them and make sure they get all the support they need to get to the graduation stage,鈥 President Bailey says. 鈥淲e have to be the architects of the university we want to be.鈥 This month鈥檚 message also touches upon SOU鈥檚 value to its region and state. A study from a few years ago found that the university generates $282 million per year in economic activity 鈥 almost nine times the $32 million SOU receives from the state鈥檚 Public University Support Fund. The governor has recently announced that she wants to elevate Oregon to be one of the nation鈥檚 top 10 business-friendly states, and President Bailey notes that the current top 10 states on that list contribute about $5,000 per year more per student in their public universities than Oregon. 鈥淯niversities are the engines to make that (business-friendly ranking) happen,鈥 he says.
