Offered as an Academic Certification
Explore and examine the contemporary and past experiences of the Native American peoples of Oregon and beyond. Required coursework is interdisciplinary among campus majors. Many practica and internship opportunities exist in the local community, on campus, and with tribal entities. Examples are SOU’s Native American Student Union (NASU), Konaway Nika Tillicum (Native American Youth Academy at SOU), and the Southern Oregon Historical Society.
The Certificate in Native American Studies prepares students to work effectively in Indian Country. The certificate equips students of all backgrounds with the requisite knowledge and experience for any number of career paths, in addition to fostering personal growth and enrichment.

This interdisciplinary academic certificate serves to educate students about the knowledge, experiences, and rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples of Oregon and beyond.
Degree Roadmap
Students pursuing a Certificate in Native American Studies will complete 36 credits which includes a Practicum experience. Courses including Introduction to Native American Studies, Tribal Critical Race Theory, and Orientation to Research in Native America make up the core courses. Students may explore a variety of topics from other programs such as English, History, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology.
Capstone
Many students are delighted to find that an NAS certificate or minor complements their major. Whether a student is getting a degree in Business, Environmental Science, or Education, an NAS emphasis can enhance a wide range of field specific studies and make a graduate more agile and competitive on the job market.
