From a very young age, Daniel Espinosa Santillana knew he wanted to play f煤tbol, but he never imagined he would end up playing in the United States, on SOU鈥檚 soccer team. Originally from Puebla, Mexico, his soccer talent led him to stand out in professional youth and development teams, including Club Puebla, Club Necaxa, Atl茅tico Morelia, and Canc煤n FC. He played in all professional youth categories from U-13 to U-23, as well as in the Third Division and the Expansion League (professional Second Division). Among his achievements are runner-up in the U-17 Liga BBVA MX and champion of the U-16 Premier League, as well as a third-place finish in the Northern Ireland Super Cup, reflecting his discipline, dedication, and values from an early age.
Furthermore, living between Mexican and American cultures has been one of the most formative experiences of his life, as it has allowed him to understand who he is in two completely different contexts. In Mexico, he grew up with a family-centered outlook on life, a sense of closeness with others, and the passion with which soccer is lived鈥攚here everything is experienced in a more emotional and collective way. That culture taught him the importance of never giving up and of deeply valuing the support of those around him. However, upon arriving in the United States, he encountered a more structured, disciplined, and academically focused environment, where roles are clear and communication is more direct. Over time, he came to understand that both cultures hold significant value: one gave him identity, passion, and humanity, while the other has given him discipline, order, and a mindset of constant improvement. Today, he seeks to build his own identity that combines the best of both worlds to grow as a person, student, and athlete.
Daniel is currently pursuing his studies as an international student-athlete at 麻豆传媒女神 (SOU). He found it easy to fit in with the team, as there is a large Mexican-American community on the team and many supportive teammates. A Business Administration major, Daniel also works as a Spanish tutor in the Language Lab and enjoys sharing his culture and language with SOU students taking first and second year Spanish courses. For Daniel, SOU means being highly competitive in all areas, being a positive leader and a winner, applying on and off the field the values that have guided him his entire life: respect, honesty, and kindness.
His daily life combines intense training with the team, physical recovery, a healthy diet, classes, Spanish tutoring, studying, and quality time with friends, balancing academic and athletic responsibilities. Daniel strives to maintain a balance between his academic and athletic performance, while staying connected to his roots and sharing his passion for soccer with the university community.
鈥淪occer has shaped me as a person, and it has taught me that life isn’t all about soccer.鈥
Despite the challenges of being an international student-athlete, Daniel deeply appreciates the support of his family, coaches, teammates, and professors. He highlights how the SOU community has allowed him to grow culturally, academically, and athletically, while maintaining his Mexican roots. His goals include continuing to grow as a player, achieving further athletic success, maintaining his academic performance, and serving as a role model for other international student-athletes.
Daniel represents the new generation of international students who not only pursue their athletic dreams but also seek to make a positive impact within the university community, combining competitiveness, leadership, respect, honesty, kindness, and a passion for their culture and sport.
